EXPRESSIVE ARTS THERAPY

Expressive Arts Therapy uses creative expression to help individuals explore thoughts, emotions, experiences, and parts of themselves that may be difficult to put into words. Through activities such as painting, drawing, collage, clay, movement, sound, and journaling, clients can engage with their experiences in a sensory and intuitive way. This process can support emotional expression, self-awareness, connection, and healing, particularly when feelings are overwhelming, unresolved, or difficult to access through talk therapy alone.

At its heart, expressive arts therapy is less about creating something beautiful and more about what can be discovered through the process of creating. Engaging with different materials and forms of expression can help reduce stress, increase emotional awareness, and create space for reflection and self-exploration. The process can bring less-understood thoughts and feelings into greater awareness, helping individuals develop new perspectives, strengthen their sense of self, and support personal growth. With adults, this might involve using creative expression to explore emotions, relationships, life experiences, or personal challenges. While with children, art and creative play can provide a natural and developmentally appropriate way to communicate feelings, process experiences, and explore their world, giving them the tools and resources they need as they grow. No artistic experience or skill is required. The focus is on curiosity, self-expression, and the meaning that emerges through the creative process.
